The Piscataway people lived in what is now Montgomery County centuries before European explorers came in the 17 th century. A man named Nathaniel Pigman owned much of Montgomery County in the late 18 th century, and in 1819, Edward Hughes purchased the area that would become Damascus. Hughes was named the postmaster of the community by President James Madison.
Today, Damascus is home to just over 10,000 people. Damascus was formally incorporated from 1890 to 1914, but is now considered unincorporated territory. The community lies outside the Baltimore-Washington DC metro area, has retained much of its rural charm over the years. Thousands of people flock to the Damascus Community Fair every year to see various projects from local 4-H clubs.
